Stainless Steel and Rust Staining

“Can rust removers remove rust on stainless steel?”

The answer depends on the condition of the rust.
If the rust is still shallow, it may be possible to remove it.
However, if it has been left for a long time and has penetrated deeply, rust removers may not be effective.

Stainless steel is a metal that is resistant to rusting.
However, rust can appear on stainless steel when it comes into contact with nearby rusting metals. This phenomenon is often called rust staining. In other words, the rust does not originate from the stainless steel itself, but from another metal that has rusted.

We conducted the following experiment:
We placed a rusted paper clip on a stainless steel plate (Photo ①).
Every 3–4 days, we dropped a single drop of water onto the clip.
After three weeks, when we lifted the paper clip, rust remained in the shape of the clip (Photo ②).
In this way, rust from the paper clip transferred to the surface of the stainless steel, creating rust staining.

The transferred rust rests on the surface and is considered shallow.
If the rusted clip is left in a rust-prone environment, the rust will gradually penetrate into the stainless steel, becoming deep rust.
If rust is detected early while it is still shallow, it can be removed with a rust remover. Photo ③ shows half of the rusted surface wiped with a tissue soaked in KC-12.
Where KC-12 was applied, not only did the rust disappear, but the surface’s dullness was also removed, leaving it clean (Photo ④).

In real-world situations, even microscopic rust particles can cause small spot-like rust stains to appear unnoticed.
If there is a risk of rust particles spreading, measures such as cleaning the product, covering it, or using anti-rust oil can be effective.

Although stainless steel is resistant to rust, under certain conditions (presence of acidic substances or chlorine, etc.), deep rust may still occur.
Once the rust penetrates too deeply, mechanical removal is the only option. However, if detected early, it can be removed using a rust remover.
